A Conversation with the Visionary Costume Designer Behind Straw and Why Did I Get Married Again?

By Chris Toleto

In Hollywood, audiences often remember the performances, the plot twists, and the unforgettable scenes. But behind every iconic character is another storyteller whose work speaks before a single word is ever said.

That storyteller is often the costume designer.

And few understand that power better than Raiyonda Vereen.

For more than two decades, Raiyonda has helped shape the visual language of film and television through costume design that is sophisticated, intentional, and deeply character-driven. As a leading costume designer at Tyler Perry Studios, she has become one of the most respected creative forces working behind the camera today.

Her résumé speaks for itself.

From blockbuster films such as The Hunger Games: Catching FireHidden Figures, and Ride Along to acclaimed television productions including The OvalRuthlessHouse of Payne, and Assisted Living, Raiyonda has built a career defined by excellence, discipline, and artistic precision.

Now, her work is commanding even greater industry attention.

With Netflix’s Straw generating Emmy consideration and her costume design receiving major recognition in the upcoming Why Did I Get Married Again, Raiyonda continues proving what industry insiders have long known: she is among the elite.

But what makes Raiyonda exceptional is not simply the volume of her work.

It is the intentionality behind it.

“Clothing tells the audience who a character is before they ever speak,” Raiyonda says. “Wardrobe helps communicate power, vulnerability, status, pain, growth, and transformation.”

That philosophy has become her signature.

She understands costume design not as styling, but as storytelling.

Every silhouette, texture, fabric, and color choice becomes part of the emotional architecture of a film.

This level of mastery does not happen by accident.

After graduating from Howard University with a business marketing background, Raiyonda built her career from the ground up, mastering every layer of wardrobe production before ascending into one of the industry’s most demanding leadership roles. That journey gave her not only technical expertise, but the ability to lead large costume departments with efficiency and vision.

In an industry often focused on who appears in front of the camera, Raiyonda represents something equally powerful: the brilliance behind it.

She helps actors become fully realized characters.

She helps directors translate emotion visually.

She helps stories become unforgettable.

And while fashion remains central to her work, legacy may be her greatest design.

Raiyonda Vereen is redefining what leadership looks like for Black women in Hollywood’s creative departments. She is proving that costume design is not a supporting element of production.

It is artistry.

It is strategy.

It is power.

As Hollywood continues evolving, one thing is certain: Raiyonda Vereen is not chasing recognition.

She has earned her place.

And with every production, every fitting, and every frame, she continues building a legacy stitched into the fabric of modern storytelling.
